Revolutionary achievements require great sacrifices - the story of the conquest of the Matterhorn.
No mountain in the world has such an unmistakable outline as the Matterhorn. It seems inaccessible from all sides. No one knows what the inhabitants of the Valais Alps felt or thought when they saw "The Mountain", as they call this peak to this day...
The first conquest of the Matterhorn is a story about a friendship that fell apart, about a battle between two expeditions, about disappointment and about a great tragedy. The Matterhorn was first attempted in 1857 by the Italian mountaineer, hunter and guide Jean-Antoine Carrel. Edward Whymper, who originally went to the Alps as an illustrator of mountain panoramas, learned about his efforts. The two men became friends and in the early 1860s, together or separately, they made several unsuccessful attempts to conquer the Matterhorn, which was also attempted by a number of other climbers in the late 1950s and early 1860s. Success was achieved only in 1865 by Whymper with his expedition, several members of which perished during the descent. Carrel conquered the summit three days later. To date, this iconic and popular mountain has claimed around 500 lives.
An extremely engaging book by the most famous mountaineer of our time touches on themes related to being human and basic ethical values such as responsibility, trust and betrayal.
