The theme of the novel The Trap is the story of people who lead a double life. Vít Kail is a moderately wealthy notary with a good clientele. He and his doctor wife Milan built a tastefully furnished villa on the outskirts of Prague, but their marriage remains childless even after more than ten years. More than once, their loved ones are surprised and blame the self-confident Milana. However, Vít's unexpected death reveals that he rented an apartment near his office in the center, lived in it secretly with his second family, and has a nine-year-old son with the artist Galla, who is named after him and is his heir. This forces both of Vítov's wives to act and they draw relatives and friends into their disputes. For Vito, the women's world became a trap, and when he got caught in it, he let the genie out of the bottle, which will serve many people, but only at the price of revealing more secrets of the other heroes of the novel.
