Fairy tale about the family and friends of the disobedient St. John's wort, who lives behind a stream under a juniper tree with his mother and father. The author of the book was an evangelical priest, and the Beetles are an allegorical depiction of a family that lives according to Christian values, in harmony with nature. He was primarily concerned with depicting meanings such as family cohesion, mutual respect, harmony between man and nature, or obedience to God. He was inspired by the subject one beautiful afternoon, when he was resting near Hořátva and watching the buzz and hustle and bustle of various bugs. He thought the story through and then wrote the largest part in Čáslav. He deliberately did not use any linguistic experiments, the style is simple so that it can be easily understood by those for whom it is primarily intended, i.e. children. Some partially autobiographical references can be found in the text, for example, Broučka's favorite dish (cabbage soup) was also the author's favorite dish. The individual episodes take place over the course of the calendar year, i.e. from winter or spring to winter, and describe not only the main activity of the St. John's wort, i.e. shining a light on people at night (that is why the protagonists of the books have the opposite life cycle, i.e. morning is evening and vice versa), but even everyday worries and joys. From its first edition in 1876 until now, an incredible number of editions have been published, with illustrations by the most famous artists. It still finds its children's readers today, and some of the adaptations on the screen or radio productions are legendary. In 2021, the Tympanum publishing house also contributes to the constellation with its version, brilliantly read by Naďa Konvalinková.
